2/22/10 Regarding the Two Rivers Community Group’s proposed Washougal Farmer’s Market, I am excited about the possibility of a local market starting up. It is the type of thing that can add to the sense of community as well as give our fair city added value for those who already love the area. However, I have some concerns about the proposal from Two Rivers Community Group. Specifically, I will oppose any effort to treat this endeavor any differently than any other community group hosting a function. I believe it is completely inappropriate for the city to pay for mailers advertising the market. This is a gift of public funds for private purposes, and as such is against the state constitution. As for the use of Reflection Plaza, it is my understanding that we already have a method by which interested groups can reserve this public space. I would expect the Two Rivers Community Group to follow the same rules as any other group. If there are enough people who will support a farmer’s market, the city will not need to underwrite it with public tax dollars. A successful farmer’s market should be able to sustain itself without tax subsidies. I look forward to the day that we have a successful farmer’s market in Washougal.
